When I was planning my Leh trip, everyone told me Pangong Lake was a must-visit. But here’s the thing – I deliberately chose Tso Moriri instead, and it turned out to be one of my best travel decisions ever.
You know how Pangong Lake became famous after 3 Idiots, right? That last scene with Kareena Kapoor left everyone wondering if such a place actually existed in India. The movie put Pangong Lake firmly on every tourist’s radar. When I visited Leh recently, I noticed local tour operators calling it the “3 Idiots Lake” in their itineraries. There’s even “Rancho’s school” and cafes named after the movie!

Why I Chose Tso Moriri Over Pangong Lake
Considering all the hype around Pangong Lake, I decided to take a different route. I chose Tso Moriri – and by the way, “Tso” means lake in the local language, so it’s also called Moriri Lake. The landscapes were just as stunning as what you see in 3 Idiots. That brilliant contrast between the deep blue water, endless sky, and barren mountains? Tso Moriri delivered all of that.
The dominating clouds at the distant horizon created this picture-perfect setup that made me forget all about my camera settings. Far in the distance, dark clouds were brewing, and you could actually see the rain falling in gray streaks above the mountains. We quickly snapped some pictures before the weather changed – classic Ladakh style!
The Biggest Difference: Solitude at Tso Moriri
Here’s what completely won me over – we had the entire lake to ourselves. Some of my friends even took a dip in the freezing water (crazy, I know!). A couple of birds circled overhead, scanning for fish, and some ducks swam closer to us, probably because they hadn’t seen many tourists there.
When you’re driving from Leh to tso moriri, you’ll notice something interesting. There’s a common road from Leh that eventually bifurcates – one route leads to Pangong Lake and the other to Tso Moriri. After that split, we were literally the only car heading towards Tso Moriri. We did see some adventurous bikers keeping us company, but that’s about it.

My Honest Take on Pangong Lake vs Tso Moriri
Look, I’ll be completely honest here – I haven’t actually been to Pangong Lake yet. I will definitely visit it on my next Leh trip. So maybe it’s unfair to declare tso moriri the winner without experiencing both. But based on what I’ve heard from fellow travelers about the crowds at Pangong Lake, I’m pretty confident about my choice.
The thing about travel is that everyone has different preferences. Some people love the energy of popular spots, while others (like me) prefer the peace of less-crowded places. The altitude of tso moriri lake at 4,522 meters gives you that same high-altitude lake experience as Pangong, but with way more solitude.
