Kodagu, known colloquially as Coorg, is a rejuvenation haven for most tourists. Albeit famous for awe-inspiring landscapes and endless expanses of ploughed fields, Coorg is more than just a refuge for tranquillity. The rivers that stream through every nook and cranny of the district gush with the kind of adrenaline that can only be traced to one distinctive marine experience – white water rafting.
Emerging as a popular adventure sport in India, river rafting tops the list of things to do in Coorg. Flowing from the banks of Kithu Kakathu, the Barapole River hosts the most challenging stretch of rapids in the region.
If you are an experienced enthusiast of the sport, you will find yourself addicted to the choppy waters of Barapole. The river provides the perfect setting for rafters in more terms than just the turbulent aquatic surface, though. As you paddle your way to the Brahmagiri Hills, you can feast your eyes on splendid views of plush rainforests and a wildlife sanctuary.
Before you begin, however, you will go through a drill of about 2.5 kilometres, which leads you straight into the river. From your base camp near the Ponya Devarakad, you will venture into the first stretch of rapids after 600 metres of paddling in the pool. This level is known as the Morning Coffee.
After four kilometres, the river drops through rapids ranging from classes 3 to 5 and enters the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. From here, you will cross the threshold of more rapids like Grasshopper, Wicked Witch, and finally, Big Bang.
The entire experience lasts for 90 minutes. You can choose one of the many time slots available between 9 AM till 3 PM. Don’t forget to carry a pair of dry clothes, a cap, and a pair of comfortable shoes along with you. And even though the experts will share safety tips with you, we advise you to keep the following things in mind:
• Change in to T-shirts and shorts, or trousers, as well as appropriate footwear like floaters before you begin.
• Avoid loose clothing, and do not carry expensive items such as jewellery and watches with you.
• Do not consume intoxicating substances before or during the activity.
• Only those between the ages of 14 and 60 are allowed on the ride.
