The lesser-known destination of Nisargadhama in Coorg is located approximately three kilometres away from Kushalanagar and 30 kilometres from Madikeri. This 64-acre island is an incredible feat of nature that is formed by the Cauvery River and is accessible through a hanging rope bridge.
Carpeted by an exuberant undergrowth of bamboo groves, teak trees, and sandalwood, the island has delightful river-side cottages lining the border. You can choose to spend the night in these cottages, the tariff for which ranges somewhere between 600 and 1,000 rupees. There is a host of activities that will keep you thoroughly occupied and entertained. For instance, you can take an elephant ride with your kids, or float across the beautiful waves while relaxing on a boat.
If you are feeling adventurous, step into the river and feel the cold, pristine water embrace your feet. However, you are advised to adhere to the safety norms laid down by the authorities, who will only allow you and your children to enter the shallow points. Some other points of interest here include the Nisargadhama Ecological Park, which is a source of great awe and joy for those who enjoy the peaceful company of Mother Nature. Inside, you will find a rabbit enclosure, deer park, children’s playground, a mesmerizing orchid garden, and a tiny snack house, making it the perfect picnic spot for your family. Feeding the animals is strictly prohibited, though, and so is carrying or disposing of plastic bags.
Entry to the island is free of cost. The nominal fee of taking an elephant or boat ride on the island is 500-800 rupees for anyone over the age of five years, but the memories you will make along the way are priceless. While the island is open to the public throughout the day, you may want to rent a cottage and stay overnight in order to make the best of your experience. The recommended duration of your stay is two-three days.
There are many interesting places to visit in Karnataka, but none of them are as charming for a weekend getaway as Nisargadhama. The climate is pleasant, environment is clean, and photo opportunities are aplenty. You definitely do not want to make your family miss out on this one.
