Day 3 of the Kerala itinerary starts with Periyar National Park – the country’s largest tiger reserve, sprawling 300 square miles, home to several species like deer, elephants, and Nilgiri langurs- is a 3-4 hour drive from Munnar. Go on the tiger trail with armed guides and patrol officers for that off-beat jungle thrill.

Enjoy Bamboo rafting in the catchment area of the Periyar lake. Visit the Green Park Ayurvedic and Spices Plantation for the aromatic spices you can carry back home.

Leave for Varkala in the afternoon and catch the sunset there. Varkala is 120 kms away and about a 3-hour drive from Alleppey and is famous for its sea views and sunset from its 15-metre high Northern Cliff on the seaside dotted with shacks filled with the aroma of seafood.

DAY 8 & 9

Explore Varkala and spend 2 nights

Start your morning in Varkala by visiting the Anjengo Fort and lighthouse established by the British East India Company in 1696. Other places to see are the Vishnu temple which is believed to be at least 2,000 years old, and the Kaduvayil Juma Masjid, popular with Islamic believers for its healing powers.

Kappil Lake contoured by coconut trees, is also a prime attraction of this town. Take a quick stop at the Varkala Tunnel, a colonial-era structure that is believed to have taken 14 years to build and was frequently used by sailors on their way to Thiruvananthapuram. St. Sebastian’s Pilgrim Church is also well known for its calm and beautiful interiors.

Reach Thiruvananthapuram before or after lunch, and spend the latter half of the day there.

This is the bustling capital city of Kerala and worth spending the last 2 days of your trip in. It takes 1-2 hours to reach here from Varkala.

Your must-see list for the first day in the city should include the Neyyar dam and wildlife sanctuary to enjoy the lion and deer safari, the crocodile farm, and watch the elephants in their habitat. Trek to Agasthyakoodam – with a statue of Lord Agastya at its peak for the views around.

As the name implies, the water flows on a needle-like sharp spike of rocks at the base. The natural pool that is created below the falls attracts visitors with cool lucid water. You can take a dip in the water. You can find a small lake called Cheenikkund at the peak of the fall. You can get a rare chance of wild animal sighting here.

2. Kanthanpara Waterfall

Located around 40 km from Wayanad Bus Station, Kanthanpara Waterfall can be part of your Kerala trip. This waterfall holds the pride of being one of the most attractive waterfalls of the Western Ghats. It is one of the idyllic places with glistering and soothing waters. With a visit to this waterfall, you can get a purest form of nature therapy.

You can plan a visit to this waterfall between October and May. Even though it is a less-crowded waterfall, you can spend some quality time amidst nature at this waterfall.

3. Meenmutty Waterfalls

During your Wayanad tour, you can consider including this waterfall. This is one of the most popular Wayanad tourist places. You can choose one of the two paths available to walk to this waterfall. One path will take you to the side view of the waterfall, where you can get wet in the running water.

4. Sree Thirunelli Mahavishnu Temple

You can expect to get a divine experience at the Thirunelli Temple dedicated to Mahavishnu. Most visitors feel that they get a divine experience at the temple. Many tourists including me admired the locality as well. You can expect to get a spiritual experience at this ancient temple.

The temple is located on the side of Brahmagiri Hills. One of the key features of the temple is its location at an altitude of around 900 metres in a valley entirely bounded by forest and mountain ranges. The name Thirunelli comes from Nelli, which is nothing but gooseberry. The temple has a gooseberry tree and there is a legend associated with this temple.

Thirunelli Temple is thought to have been constructed by Lord Brahma. He was roaming around the earth. When he was travelling, he identified the attractiveness of the Brahmagiri Hills. He came down to the spot and found an idol of Vishnu under a Gooseberry tree. He installed the idol there and named the temple Satyamalaka Temple. Based on an appeal made by Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu converted the waters of the area holy. The Lord also blessed the waters to get rid of the sins of devotees. This is why the river here is called Papanasini. It means that that river washes away all your sins when you take a dip.

5. Thrissillery Shiva Temple

The Thrissilery Shiva Temple is yet another spot promoted by Wayanad tourism. As the name implies, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. You can reach this temple within a 19 km drive from Thirunelli. The temple has been built following Kerala-style architecture. You can find unique proportions and carvings in this temple complex.

This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva has been constructed around 1000 years ago. It was built by Chera Kings. Apart from the main deity Lord Shiva, the temple has smaller shrines of other gods. You can expect a tranquil and calm ambience. The temple has a pond with cold water and many say that the pond never dries. The outer walls of the temple have been made using stone and they have engravings.

6. Valliyoorkkavu Bhagavathy Temple

This is a holy establishment that plays an integral role in the life of the local tribes of Wayanad. The temple conducts a 10-day festival in January or February every year. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. The goddess is worshipped in three forms. They are Jala Durga, Bhadrakali and Vana Durga. You can reach the temple within a 3 km drive from the Mananthavady town in Wayanad.

Peaks in Wayanad

Again, if you plan to climb the peaks in the hill station, you should look for the best time to visit Wayanad. Only when you visit the peak in the right season, you can experience the beauty of the panoramic views.

7. Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak located in Meppady near Wayanad is officially known as Chembra Kodumudi. It holds the pride of being the highest peak in Wayanad. On the way to the peak, you can find a heart-shaped lake. This is a major attraction in this place as the lake is said to have never dried up. When you trek for 4 km, you can reach the peak to get excellent views of the region.

Trekking enthusiasts suggest that this peak is a must-visit when you are in Wayanad. From this peak, you can see the entire Wayanad and its attractions from a bird’s eye view. When you start around 7 am, you are sure to get the best experience. Most trekkers feel that it is a bit hard to trek but your trek will be well-rewarded with the stunning views from the top.

8. Banasura Hill

Among the tourist places in Wayanad, most people recommend visiting the Banasura Dam. This dam is located at the foot of Banasura Hill. If you are ready for a three-hour climb amidst nature, you can plan your trek to this hill. You can expect a spectacular view from the top. However, for a climb, you need to get permission from the North Wayanad Forest Division Office. This office is located in Mananchavady.

You can cover the Banasura Dam site visit when you finish your trekking. This dam holds the pride of being the largest earth dam in India. You can enjoy speedboat rides and there are also other adventure activities like ziplining and kayaking. If you cannot climb, transportation facilities at Rs.10 is available. You can also find a park at the base. You can swing here on the natural swings made from long trees.

9. Kurumbalakotta Hill

Kurumbalakotta is a mountain hillock that is located around 3200 feet above sea level. You can get a splendid view of the region from the top of the hill. The important factor that makes this hill to be part of your Wayanad trip is that it is located right in the centre of Wayanad. The hillock is part of the Deccan Plateau.

The interesting thing about this hill is that here you can see the confluence of Eastern and Western Ghats. Trekking to this hill is a tough task as there is no specific path for trekkers to climb on. So, if you are an adventurous trekker, you will love this place for sure. The best time to visit this hillock is between September and March.

Yes, this is a town where people from Christian, Islamic, and Hindu religions coexist harmoniously. The Kasargod district of Kerala houses many tourist spots. For instance, it houses beaches, the popular Bekal Fort, and many such attractions. This is why the town and the district in which it is located is known as the land of lengthy sandy beaches, attractive hills, rivers, forts and gods. This blog post aims to inform you about this town so you can plan your visit.

Kasargod – An Introduction

It would not be an overstatement to say that Kasargod district is the best place in Kerala for history buffs to visit. Yes, it narrates the mythical take on Kerala’s religious and cultural practices. Not only history buffs, but nature lovers will also find this district is suitable for a visit to nature lovers with its spectacular landscapes. The Kasargod Railway Station, with code KGQ, is on the Kozhikode – Mangalore – Mumbai Route. So, you can find trains that pass through this railway station from most cities in India.

The major trains that pass through this station include West Coast Super Fast Express, Mangaluru Central Mail, Mangaluru Central Intercity SF Express and Mangaluru Central SF Express. Other popular trains like Mangalore Mail, Netravati Express, Malabar Express and Matsyagandha Express pass through this railway station.

By Flight

If you are travelling from other countries, the nearest International Airport to Kasargod is Mangalore International Airport. This airport is located around 60 km from the town. From this airport, you can travel by train, taxi or bus to reach the town. The other major airports in Kerala, like Cochin International Airport and Kannur International Airport, are located around 350 and 120 km away, respectively, from Kasargod.

By Car

If you prefer to travel by car, you can choose one of the following routes based on the place from which you are starting your trip:

  • From Kochi, Kasargod is located around 370 km. In this case, you will have to take the NH66 route. The travel time will be at least 9 hours in this case.
  • If you are travelling from Bangalore, you will have to take the NH75 and 66 routes. The distance is around 360 km in this case.
  • From Mangalore, Kasargod is reachable within a 50 km drive. By taking the NH 66 route, you can reach the town within not more than 2 hours of driving.

Key Attractions & Things to Do

Bekal Fort

One of the important places to visit in Kasargod is Bekal Fort. You will have to travel around 16 km south to reach this fort. It is a 300-year-old defensive fort. It holds the pride of being the well-preserved and largest fort in the state. The key attraction of this fort is the panoramic view of the Arabian Sea. The fort houses an observation tower as well, which was once used for firing cannons against intruders.

Ranipuram Hills

Located around 55 km from Kasargod, this spot is ideal if you are a trekking enthusiast. Previously, this attraction was called Madathumala. It is located around 750 metres above sea level. After you trek for around 2 and a half km, you will reach the summit. The summit houses a cave. Not only for adventure seekers, this place is ideal for those looking for a solace atmosphere to relax.

Ananthapura Lake Temple

This temple has been carved with mythological takes of puranas. The temple has a hidden cave that leads to a pond. The temple is in the middle of the lake. This is why it is called a Lake Temple. An excellent legend is associated with a temple. It is said that the lake has a crocodile named Babiya. It has never hurt humans so far. It is believed to be a protector of the temple. Every day, the god’s prasadam is served to the crocodile. Also, once a crocodile in the pond ages and dies, another crocodile fills its place.

Malom Wildlife Sanctuary

If you could travel around 64 km from Kasargod, you could reach this wildlife sanctuary. A combination of magnificent wildlife and fauna, this sanctuary is home to nearly 200 species of vivid birds and animals like bison, deer, tiger and elephant. If you are a wildlife enthusiast or a bird watcher, you will love visiting this sanctuary. If you are lucky enough, you might spot reptiles like pythons and cobras in this wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary also encompasses some rare herbs and medicinal plants.

Valiyaparamba

If you would like to get close to nature, you can plan a visit to Valiyparamba. This is an attractive, lazy backwater destination in Kasargod. If you are looking for a secluded spot, you will love this attraction for sure. The emerald green waters and lush green groves add to the beauty of the backwater destination. Which one to choose might be your question. If you want to visit a hill station in the state, you can consider Ponmudi. It is located around 57 km from the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. You can understand the attractiveness of the hill station from the fact that it is called “Kashmir of Kerala”.

Ponmudi – An Introduction

You might have heard that Kerala is one of the states through which the Western Ghats passes. Ponmudi is part of these ghats in the state. This hill station is popular for its winding roads, mist-covered peaks and lush green landscapes. The name of the hill station, when translated to English, is Golden Peak.

How to Reach Ponmudi?

By Bus

If you are travelling from other parts of Kerala, you might find direct KSRTC buses to Ponmudi. If you are travelling from other nearby states like Tamil Nadu and AP, you can reach Thiruvananthapuram first by bus. From this capital city, you can find direct KSRTC buses to Ponmudi. From the main bus terminus in this city, you can find regular buses operated to the hill station. Apart from Trivandrum, the other nearest bus station to Ponmudi is in Nedumangad.

By Train

Indeed, Trivandrum Railway Station is the nearest railway station to the hill station. You know that this city is connected by regular trains from different parts of South India and even North India. From this railway station, the distance to the hill station is around 57 km. You can travel this distance by hiring a taxi from the railway station. Otherwise, you can travel by a KSRTC Bus to reach the hill station from this railway station.

By Flight

Similar to the railway station, the Trivandrum Airport is the nearest to the hill station. You can find taxis outside the airport to take you to the hill station. Many flight operators operate regular flights from different cities in India to Trivandrum.

By Car

If you are travelling from nearby towns and cities, you can drive to Ponmudi. Driving to the hill station will be a delightful experience as the route is beautified by dense forests, waterfalls and scenic landscapes. The roads are well maintained, and when you choose the ideal season, you will experience a scenic drive to the hill station.

Key Attractions & Things to Do

Kallar

One of the best things to do when you are on your way to Ponmudi is to cover Kallar. This spot is best suited for trekking enthusiasts. It is located on the way to Ponmudi from Trivandrum. If you are driving your car to Ponmudi from Trivandrum, you can make sure to stop at this place. Kallar is home to the popular Meenmutty Falls.

Visit the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary

If you are a wildlife enthusiast, you should not miss out on a visit to this wildlife sanctuary. To reach this sanctuary, you will have to travel for around 35 km. As you can reach the sanctuary within a one-and-half km drive from Ponmudi, you can spend the rest of your day there.

Visit the Koyikkal Palace

By travelling around 18 km from Ponmudi, you can reach this palace located in the Nedumangad Village. From this village, there are also direct buses to take you to Ponmudi. The palace was built for the queen of the Venad Royal Family. Presently, the palace is popular for its museum set up by the Archaeological department of the state. You can gain insights into the remarkable art form of Kerala when you visit this palace. If you are a history buff, you will love a visit to this palace.

Agasthyakoodam Visit

If you can travel around 21 km from Ponmudi, you can reach this popular pilgrimage site. It should be stated that it is a paradise for trekkers as well. It has the pride of being the second highest peak in Kerala. You will have to trek by a forest area to reach this peak.

Golden Valley

When you visit Kallar, apart from Kallar River, you can visit the Golden Valley. It is a picturesque location known for its lush green valley, golden sand and crystal clear water. This is a relaxing picnic spot that you should not miss out on during your visit to Ponmudi.

Mini Zoo

The Mini Zoo is located within the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary. This mini zoo has many Barasinghas. In addition, you can see other animals as well in this zoo. Do not forget to include this place in your Ponmudi itinerary.

Tea Plantation

You can just walk around Ponmudi to see many tea plantations. You will find many workers collecting tea in the plantations. Capturing some stunning pictures amidst the tea plantations is a thing not to miss out on.

Apart from these things, a stay in Ponmudi itself is one of the best things you can do here. Many people visit this hill station mainly to spend a day or two in a relaxed atmosphere away from the busy city life. If you are more into exploration than relaxation, you can visit the places mentioned above. The pleasant climate itself will provide you with a relaxing experience in the hill station. This is why it is rightly called the Kashmir of Kerala.

Best Time & Season to Visit

The best season to visit Ponmudi is during the winter months, from November to March. You can experience misty landscapes, lush greenery and pleasant weather during this season. Above all, the ideal climatic conditions will let you participate in adventure activities as well. Avoid visiting during the monsoon months of June to September. The reason is that the hill station gets a lot of rainfall during these months.

Duration to See the Place

To explore the major attractions in Ponmudi, a day trip is sufficient if you are from Trivandrum. But, if you would like to experience the climate of the hill station, you can consider a two to three-day stay. When you have two to three days, you can cover places that are located a bit away from the hill station as well.

As Ponmudi is a forest area, the forest department might collect a meagre fee of around ₹20 if you drive your vehicle to the hill station. If you travel by bus or hired vehicle, you will not be charged any fee to enter the hill station.

Indeed, to enter some attractions, you will have to pay a small fee. These fees are collected to properly maintain the attractions for tourists to explore safely.

Can I Find ATMs in Ponmudi?

No, remember that Ponmudi has limited banking facilities. So, when you are travelling, make sure that you have sufficient cash in hand. Indeed, some shops in the hill station accept digital payments. However, it is better to carry cash so that you can spend comfortably.

Can I Visit Ponmudi in the Summer?

Yes, you can visit. However, people avoid visiting the hill station in the summer season as it will be slightly warm. Tourists mainly visit the hill station during winter so that they can enjoy comfortable weather to engage in adventure activities.

This is the most inaccessible among the other beaches in Kovalam. However, hiking enthusiasts visit this beach in large numbers. It will be lovely to watch the waves crashing against the rocky shores on this beach. Many small tourist lodges are providing accommodation to tourists near the Samudra Beach. You can find tourists playing volleyball and taking sunbath on the shores of this beach. This beach is ideal for those looking for some privacy during their visit to Kovalam Beach.

In addition to these three beaches, you can also find Ashoka Beach in Kovalam. This beach is popular for its swimmable shallow waters.

Best Time & Season to Visit

The peak season to visit Kovalam Beach is between November and February. During this season, the weather will be pleasant. So, you can engage in a lot of outdoor activities by choosing this season.

Monsoon Season

Monsoon Season in Kovalam is between June and September. If you wish to enjoy the lush greenery of Kerala, you can choose this season. However, you should expect rains during this season. So, participating in outdoor activities can be tough.

The off-season is the summer months between March and May. The reason is that the climate will be hot and humid during this season. But, this season is ideal for budget travellers as they can get off-season discounts for accommodation. The crowds will be less during this season.

4 Days in Wayanad Itinerary – Things To Do & Places to Visit in Wayanad

Wayanad is one of my favorite destinations in Kerala. It makes me feel very close to nature! The forest and tea plantations accompany you throughout the trip. Wayanad has always been a rejuvenation for me!

In the past 1.5 years, I have been to Kerala thrice. Once to Kumarakom & twice to Wayanad! Based on my experiences in Wayanad, I have created this Wayanad itinerary for 4 days. I have combined both my trips to Wanayad in this itinerary, shortlisting the best attractions and not including the below-average destinations.

By following this Wayanad itinerary, you will enjoy Wayanad at its best, irrespective of whether you are traveling with your friends, family, or better half! Being an adventure enthusiast and nature lover, I have given prominence to such attractions in this Wayanad itinerary.

Along with recommended attractions in Wayanad, I have also recommended some restaurants and accommodation options in this Wayanad itinerary for 4 days. To pick attractions from Wayanad, you can read this blog of mine: Places to visit in Wayanad

Before moving to the day-wise itinerary I would like to suggest a couple of accommodations in Wayanad where I stayed. During my 1st trip to Wayanad, I stayed at Mountain Dew Homestay in Kalpetta. A quaint homestay located amidst dense forests, staying at Mountain Dew Homestay was a memorable experience. If you are a fan of nature and authentic Kerala cuisine, this homestay will not disappoint you. The tariff is around Rs 3,000 per night for one very spacious room.

The 2nd time I visited Wayanad, I stayed at Fia’s residency in Sulthan Bathery. A supreme budget property, Fia’s residency wouldn’t cater to your room service needs. However, given the rates, it shouldn’t be a concern. We booked a 2 BHK apartment in the residency for Rs 4,000. It could accommodate 15 people! We were 9 friends and per night per head cost amounted for just Rs 450! That’s one amazing deal!

You can choose to stay either at Sulthan Bathery or Kalpetta. The distance between these two destinations is roughly 23 KMs. Hence, it wouldn’t really matter where you stay as some attractions are close to the former and others are in proximity to the latter.

Day 1: Banasura Sagar Dam – Banasuramala Meenmutty Falls

Assuming you leave in the morning from Bangalore or a city nearby, you will reach around 1-2 pm. Even if you are traveling by an overnight bus, on the 1st day, just let Wayanad grow on you. Take a walk in the lanes, discover interesting food joints, and have a peek at the local life.

If you are in Sultan Bathery, you can have lunch at Wilton Restaurant. The north Indian food here is surprisingly good. You can also savor authentic Kerala cuisine here like beef chilly. In Sulthan Bathery, to fight your hunger woes at late night, you can look for the Green Palace residency hotel. There is a joint there that serves delectable food and juices. My personal favorite was the Mango juice!

After having lunch, you can continue this Wayanad itinerary and head towards Banasura Sagar Dam. The largest Earth water dam in India, Banasura Sagar Dam will be your highlight in this first day of Wayanad itinerary. The vast water body will leave you in awe and the sunset will add brilliance to your experience. There is not much to do around, but to revel in the beauty of landscapes and enchanting forms of nature. However, there is boating available if the season is right.

You can also visit Banasuramala Meenmutty Falls which is very close to Banasura Sagar Dam. The falls do not have much force and height. But, there is a natural pool where you can take a dip and relax. Ideal if you are traveling with kids.

Call a day early to wear off today’s tiredness and gear up for the Chembra peak trek the next day.

Day 2: Chembra Peak – Karapuzha Dam (Map)

Day 2 in this Wayanad itinerary will cover Chembra Peak & Karapuzha Dam. Chembra Peak takes the better part of your day and hence, not many attractions are combined with Chembra Peak today.

Start the day early and have a light breakfast to get energized for the Chembra peak trek. The trek takes 2-3 hours to complete and you can dedicate time till 2-3 pm for the Chembra peak trek. For my detailed experience, you can read my Chembra Peak trek blog post. The heart-shaped lake is the main attraction of the Chembra Peak trek.

Chembra Peak Wayanad

After the trek, you can head towards Karapuzha Dam. A smaller dam compared to Banasura Dam, Karapuzha sees lesser tourists and you will feel closer to nature here. The road to reach karapuzha dam is a bit tricky so be prepared for some bumpy ride.

End your Day 2 with a relaxing dinner after visiting Karapuzha Dam. On day 3, the Wayanad Itinerary will cover interesting waterfalls.

Day 3: Edakkal Caves – Soochipara Waterfalls – Meenmutty Waterfalls (Map)

Start Day 3 of your Wayanad Itinerary by visiting Edakkal Caves. The entry to the caves starts at 8 am and I would recommend visiting these caves as soon as possible to avoid peak traffic. Being a popular attraction, Edakkal caves attract a lot of tourists, and long queues start forming around 10 am. The timings are from 8 am to 2 pm for issuing tickets.

Edakkal caves are best known for the ancient wall paintings & art ingrained in the caves. The caves are surrounded by lush green ambiance and give you a perfect backdrop to travel back in time when art and nature were nurtured together.

After Edakkal caves, this 3rd day of the Wayanad itinerary will take you on an interesting trail of waterfalls. Soochipara & Meenmutty waterfalls are the best waterfalls in Wayanad and neither of them is worth missing. However, in the pre-monsoon season, you might not be able to witness the full prowess of these waterfalls. But, you can surely take a dip here.

Both the waterfalls require a 2 KM trek to reach the spot. But, the hike is completely worth it and you will surely enjoy spending time at these waterfalls.

Day 4: Kuruvadweep Island 

On this last day of your Wayanad itinerary, let’s keep the schedule relaxed. Instead of trekking and hiking, let’s introduce bamboo sailing! Yes, Kuruvadweep, as the name suggests, is a river island that provides bountiful views of pure nature. A placid stream flows gently, pacing playfully through rocks and sliding over pebbles. Spend some quality time with your friends and family here.

To reach the interior portions of Kuruvadweep island, you need to park your car near the entrance and opt for a bamboo raft sailing. The bamboo raft will help you to cross the river and reach the island. There are smaller water bodies in the island once you navigate through the main river. Kuruvadweep can be an interesting part of your Wayanad itinerary.

There are not many activities worth including in this Wayanad itinerary. But, you can surely get a memorable experience of staying with nature, devoid of artificial & concrete structures around.

After spending half a day here, you can proceed back and return home while reminiscing the alluring memories you just created in Wayanad!

I hope you liked this itinerary. I have not mentioned some attractions which were too crowded or too mainstream. For e.g, I have not included Pookat Lake in this Wayanad itinerary because this lake was just as mainstream as any other hill station lake in India. There were long queues for everything, popcorn sellers swarming around, and endless lines of cars trying to find parking. Not really a pleasant experience for me.
