The building has undergone renovation many times, and it was during one of these renovations that the mural of Virgin Mary surrounded by angels was installed. The current architecture can only be described as opulent.
3. St. Andrew’s Basilica
This church is known by many names, one of them being Arthunkal Church. Less than an hour’s drive south of Kochi, it is home to the biggest shrine of St Sebastian in the world, which is why many know it as St Sebastian’s Church. This church was built in the 16th century by Portuguese missionaries but it wasn’t crowned as a Basilica until 2010. It is located so close to the sea that you can smell the salty air.
4. St Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church
Located in Palayoor in Thrissur district, this is one of the oldest churches in India. It is also known as Apostolic Church. St Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, is believed to have established this church in AD 52. It has been renovated many times since, most notably in the 17th century. Although you can visit this church at any time of the year, it is especially grand during festivals such as Maha Theerthadanam (‘great pilgrimage’).
5. Pallikunnu Church
Pallikunnu Church, also known as Our Lady of Lourdes Church, is located in Wayanad in north Kerala. This Latin Catholic Church was built by in 1908 and is among the most important in Kerala. Hugely popular with local devotees, the church is a star attraction among the various tourist places in Kerala. It is believed no prayer goes unanswered at Pallikunnu Church.
